Achillion Palace - Empress Sisi's Dream

January 2026  |  6 min read

High on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea stands one of Corfu's most romantic landmarks - the Achillion Palace. Built in 1890 by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as "Sisi," this neoclassical masterpiece was her escape from the rigid protocols of the Viennese court.

A Troubled Empress Finds Peace

Elisabeth was one of history's most fascinating royals - beautiful, intelligent, restless, and deeply melancholic. After the tragic suicide of her son Crown Prince Rudolf, she found solace in Corfu's mild climate and the ancient Greek culture she adored.

The Palace

Designed by Italian architect Raffaele Caritto, the palace reflects Sisi's passion for Greek mythology, particularly the hero Achilles. Every corner reveals statues, frescoes, and motifs celebrating ancient Greece - but always with a melancholic undertone that reflected the Empress's soul.

What to See

From Sisi to Kaiser Wilhelm

After Sisi's assassination in 1898, the palace was purchased by German Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1907. He used it as a summer residence until World War I. Today it operates as a museum, and its terrace has been immortalized in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only."
